چکیده

If solar radiation management (SRM) were ever implemented, feedback of the observed climate state might be used to adjust the radiative forcing of SRM in order to compensate for uncertainty in either the forcing or the climate response. Feedback might also compensate for unexpected changes in the system, e.g. a nonlinear change in climate sensitivity. However, in addition to the intended response to greenhouse-gas induced changes, the use of feedback would also result in a geoengineering response to natural climate variability. We use a box-diffusion dynamic model of the climate system to understand how changing the properties of the feedback control affect the emergent dynamics of this coupled human–climate system, and evaluate these predictions using the HadCM3L general circulation model. In particular, some amplification of natural variability is unavoidable; any time delay (e.g., to average out natural variability, or due to decision-making) exacerbates this amplification, with oscillatory behavior possible if there is a desire for rapid correction (high feedback gain). This is a challenge for policy as a delayed response is needed for decision making. Conversely, the need for feedback to compensate for uncertainty, combined with a desire to avoid excessive amplification of natural variability, results in a limit on how rapidly SRM could respond to changes in the observed state of the climate system.

Global Stabilization of Attitude Dynamics: SDRE-based Control Laws

The State-Dependant Riccati Equation method has been frequently used to design suboptimal controllers applied to nonlinear dynamic systems. Different methods for local stability analysis of SDRE controlled systems of order greater than two such as the attitude dynamics of a general rigid body have been extended in literature; however, it is still difficult to show global stability properties of...

A New Approach in Preliminary Design of Closed Loop Solar Thermal Systems (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, a model for closed loop solar system is presented and an attempt is made to generalize the model to be utilized for primary design of any solar active thermal system. This model may be used for systems in which gas or a liquid are fluids that flow. Two new parameters, namely, the system heat delivery factor and the system heat absorption factor are introduced in the model. These ...

Identification of Linear Climate Models from the CMIP3 Multimodel Ensemble

In this paper, we investigate an ensemble of atmosphere–ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs) participating in phase 3 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3), and whose dynamic behavior is emulated by the reduced-complexity climate model MAGICC6. Using a superimposed impulse in solar radiative forcing for the purposes of system identification, we identify 12 AOGCMs in the CMIP...

Explicit feedback and the management of uncertainty in meeting climate objectives with solar geoengineering

Solar geoengineering has been proposed as a method of meeting climate objectives, such as reduced globally averaged surface temperatures. However, because of incomplete understanding of the effects of geoengineering on the climate system, its implementation would be in the presence of substantial uncertainties. In our study, we use two fully coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation models: ...

A New Near Optimal High Gain Controller For The Non-Minimum Phase Affine Nonlinear Systems

In this paper, a new analytical method to find a near-optimal high gain controller for the non-minimum phase affine nonlinear systems is introduced. This controller is derived based on the closed form solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation associated with the cheap control problem. This methodology employs an algebraic equation with parametric coefficients for the systems with s...
